Defining an Architecture for the 21st Century
International student competition in the framework of the XXI World Congress of Architecture in Berlin
On the occasion of the XXI World Congress of Architecture entitled “Resource Architecture“, which is taking place in Berlin from 22 to 26 July 2002, the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) launches an international urban design ideas competition. It will be held to promote young talent in the field of architecture under the patronage of the UNESCO and in co-operation with the Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA. The aim of the competition is to collect user-oriented and resource-saving design ideas for redeveloping an inner city area in Berlin-Mitte: Defining an Architecture for the 21st Century
Given the topics of the current architectural debate – i.e. the European city, the social city, New Urbanism, mobility, the service-and-science society – the question arises about the future direction and architectural language of our cities. The redevelopment project for a site at Heidestrasse in Berlin-Mitte is to set an example for the development, interconnecting and "meshing" of inner-city wastelands.
The competition is open to students, and is designed as a single, open international ideas competition. The entries are judged anonymously. The competition language is English.
Students with architecture and/or urban planning as their main subjects who have studied for at least two years are entitled to participate in the competition. Students who have chosen landscape planning, landscape architecture and art as their main subjects may only participate in co-operation with students of architecture and/or urban planning. Co-operation with students from other disciplines, such as structural and civil engineering, ecology, sociology, etc., is expressly desired.
A total of € 50,000 is available for prizes and distinctions.
The prize ceremony and an exhibition showing the competition results will be held during the congress; moreover, a workshop documentation will present not only the procedure, but also the most outstanding solutions.
The competition brief including data, photographs, plans and analyses has been available for downloading since 1 September 2001. All contributions have to be submitted to the office of the UIA Berlin 2002 e.V. by 27 April 2002.
