UIA Berlin 2002
XXI UIA World Congress of Architecture in Berlin (22 to 26 July 2002)
Six Thousand Architects in Berlin, the Temporary Capital City of Architecture
UIA World Congress offered diversity of content and presentation
‘Berlin has been a fascinating, stimulating and exciting venue for the XXIst UIA World Congress and, from 22 to 26 July, the capital city of architecture.’ This is the con-clusion Congress President Andreas Gottlieb Hempel drew at the final press confer-ence on 26 July 2002. ‘We wanted to offer congress participants great diversity in terms of both content and presentation and this has been a complete success. We aimed mainly for innovative, future-oriented contributions and projects by younger fellow architects as well as specialists in other disciplines.’
This was the first time the World Congress of the Union Internationale des Architec-tes, UIA, took place in Berlin. Entitled ‘Resource Architecture’, it was organised by the UIA and its German section, the Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA Federation of German Architects. Some 6,000 architects, planners and other specialists, architec-tural critics, journalists and politicians took part in the Congress events at the ICC Berlin and at the Postal Depot at Ostbahnhof. Foreign participants represented 58 per cent of all the delegates; the largest groups of participants came from Brazil, China, France, Greece and Russia.
Parallel to the thirty-four plenary sessions, the forums, workshops and the organisers’ work reports, a great number of other events attracted the congress delegates, in particular the exhibitions held at the ICC Berlin and in trade-fair Hall 20 as well as the ‘PlanCom 2002’, a trade fair for the planning professions involved in the construction industry, just across the street from the Berlin Congress Centre at the trade-fair com-plex. A total of 8,000 visitors to the fair and the various exhibitions were registered – a figure which substantiates the aptness of the event structure chosen by the organ-isers, i.e. ‘Congress—Trade Fair—Exhibitions’.
Other important side events were the exhibition of the results of the student competi-tion ‘Berlin-Heidestrasse’, to which over 1,000 contributors from 67 countries sub-mitted a total of 546 projects, and the Poster Session with 265 contributions as well as the exhibition of innovative projects from amongst 43 UIA sections as part of the International Architectural Exhibition in trade-fair Hall 20.
Special high-lights were the visits by leading politicians like Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, UNEP director general Klaus Töpfer, Federal Minister of Building Kurt Bodewig and Berlin Senator Peter Strieder as well as by prominent architects like Lord Norman Foster (with his client Ron Dennis), Kisho Kurokawa, Peter Eisenman, Shigero Ban, Rasem Badran, Dietmar Eberle and Helmut Jahn, and also the award ceremony for the UIA Gold Medal to Renzo Piano and four other UIA awards to re-puted architects and architectural critics.
The Congress programme also included more than forty exhibitions. The most impor-tant were ‘The Hand of the Architect’ at the Altes Old Museum, ‘New German Ar-chitecture’ at the Martin Gropius Building, ‘Large Projects Berlin’ at the Postal Depot, and ‘Constructing Atmospheres’ in trade-fair Hall 20.
Large numbers of congress delegates were able to discover, during more than thirty excursions and sight-seeing tours, the city of Berlin itself as an exhibition of architec-ture und thus return home with an excellent overview of the architectural and urban-design diversity of the German capital twelve years after the country’s reunification.
The next UIA World Congress will take place in Istanbul in 2005.
