World Congress of Architecture is taking place in Berlin for the first time
'Resource Architecture' as Congress theme
For the first time in its history, the Union Internationale des Architectes (UIA) in Paris has awarded the World Congress to the German national section: the Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA. From 22 - 26 July 2002, Berlin will be host to the international world of architecture. More than 5,000 architects and planners from all five continents are expected to come to the ICC Berlin to exchange ideas and experiences. UIA President, Vassilis Sgoutas, Athens, BDA President, Heinrich Pfeffer, Cologne, and Congress President, Andreas Gottlieb Hempel, Berlin have now given their official go-ahead for the intensive preparatory phase of the XXI World Congress of Architecture in Berlin in 2002.
Consequently, the Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA has founded the UIA Berlin 2002 e.V., to plan and assume responsibility for the Congress under the chairmanship of the First Vice-president of the UIA, Andreas Gottlieb Hempel. As professional congress organiser, DER CONGRESS in Berlin is taking care of the congress management. Parallel to the World Congress, the AFAG in Augsburg will be holding the PlanCom 2002 Trade Fair for Planners in the Building Sector in the exhibition halls directly linked with the ICC Berlin.
A variety of cultural events, architectural exhibitions and excursions as well as an international student competition will supplement the programme of events held at the main Congress. Preliminary conferences will also be held in various German cities to explore the main theme of the Congress in relation to specific regional concerns.
Second Announcement and Call for Contributions
On 9 May 2001, the Second Announcement was presented in Berlin. It sets out the contents of the themes of the Congress as well as the structure of the events to a broader public. A "Call for Contributions" also invites interested parties from all over the world to participate in shaping the Congress programme. Informative, innovative contributions touching on a wide range of areas are required to vividly illustrate the spectrum of themes treated at the Congress. The Scientific Committee, whose members come from all over the world, has adopted the themes of the XXI World Congress of Architecture, specifying in detail the principle theme "Resource Architecture" from the standpoints of architecture and society. The Congress will be analysing the significance of architecture in relation to technological, economic and social changes under the following aspects:
Innovation and Tradition
The Built and the Natural
Space and Identity
The key words in the desired debate will be: planning and construction processes in relation to modern environmental policy and sustained development, as well as the acceptance and perception of architecture in public space. The XXI World Congress of Architecture is part of an international dialogue on the future of our built environment.
