You are kindly requested to use the registration form to register your participation in the Main Congress, Pre-Conferences, accompanying events, excursions and sightseeing programme as well as for your hotel reservation. Alternatively, you can register online at www.uia-berlin2002.com . The reduced attendance fees apply only to registrations reaching DER-CONGRESS by 07 April 2002 / 30 June 2002 at the latest. Only credit cards will be accepted for online registration. An official registration form must be used for every registration. To register other participants please photocopy the official form. Registration will be regarded as binding upon confirmation of the online registration or receipt of registration by DER-CONGRESS, but will not be confirmed until payment of the attendance fees has been effected.

The Organisers have the pleasure to announce that Daily Tickets for the congress at a price of EUR 195 will be available at the registration counter in the entrance foyer of the ICC.
Daily Tickets include the entrance permission to the Plenums, Forums,
Workshops and Project Reports as well as to the trade fair PlanCom2002 with the International Architecture Exhibition, the Exhibition of the Congress´ Student Competition, the exhibition of the UIA Competition "Architecture and Water", the a-matter-Forum and the exhibition "Communicating Architecture" with contributions of Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners, Ingenhoven, Overdieck and Partners, Schneider + Schumacher and Sauerbruch Hutton Architects. The Daily Ticket for Monday, 22 July, includes furthermore the participation

Registered participants and students
are entitled to attend all the plenary sessions, forums, workshops and cost-free project reports at the Main Congress from 22 to 26 July 2002 and the UIA events that are open to the public; to visit the trade fair, PlanCom 2002, and the exhibitions staged by UIA Berlin 2002; to receive the Congress documents; and to take part in the Welcome Evening in the Palais am Funkturm on 22 July 2002.

Registered accompanying persons
are entitled to participate in the opening and closing plenary sessions of the Main Congress, visit the trade fair, PlanCom 2002, and the exhibitions staged by UIA Berlin 2002 and to attend the Welcome Evening in the Palais am Funkturm on 22 July 2002. Apart from the events mentioned above, accompanying persons will not be admitted to meetings and presentations in the ICC Berlin and will not be given a name tag. Vouchers will be issued for those entitled to admission.

Payment

Payment should be effected in one of the following ways at the time the registration form is dispatched:
a) by credit card using VISA/Diners Club/Eurocard/MasterCard only. No other credit cards will be accepted. The current exchange rates will apply to all credit card payments. Online registration requires simultaneous payment by credit card.
b) by bank transfer in EURO to DER-CONGRESS, Congress Organisation, Commerzbank AG Frankfurt/Main, Account No. 589 51 56, Bank Sort Code No. 500 400 00.

A copy of the bank transfer stating the name of all the participants to be registered and the reference number ST 02 160 must be attached to the registration form. If payment is being effected for several participants please submit a list of all the names.

All bank charges must be paid by the participant. If they are not paid in advance they will be invoiced when the participant(s) concerned register at the ICC in Berlin.



Terms of congress participation and cancellation

Alterations
Please note that any alteration made to a booking (with the exception of changes in name) will incur a handling charge of EURO 16. Since a personal registration cannot be transferred to anyone else, changes of name will be treated as a cancellation plus re-registration. Cancellation of the entire registration will not incur a handling charge, but a cancellation charge will be made as detailed below.

There will be no reimbursement of attendance fees for any cancellations delivered by mail after 20 May 2002. The full attendance fee must also be paid if the participant does not attend the congress.

The attendance fee for the Pre-Conferences includes:
participation in receptions, presentations and excursions plus the congress documents
Participants must pay separately for arrival, departure and accommodation costs.
The fee for the Pre-Conferences without UIA World Congress registration incorporates a handling charge of EURO 25, incl. VAT EURO 3.45

A charge of EURO 50 will be levied for cancellations delivered by mail to DER-CONGRESS up to 20 May 2002. The attendance fee will not be reimbursed for cancellations arriving by mail after 20 May 2002. The full attendance fee must also be paid if the participant does not attend the Pre-Conference. Cancellations will only be accepted in writing. The Pre-Conferences will only take place if there is a minimum number of participants. If this minimum number is not reached the events will be cancelled and payment reimbursed. No other claims may be derived from the cancellation.

Evening events
The full fee must be paid if registration for evening events is cancelled after 20 May 2002.

Excursions, day trips and sightseeing programme
The full fee must be paid for any cancellations after 20 May 2002 of tours forming part of the sightseeing programme, the Berlin excursions and the day trips. There will be no reimbursement. The tours will only take place if there is a minimum number of participants. If this number is not reached by the deadline for registration the event will be cancelled and the payment already effected will be reimbursed. No further claims will be accepted. There will be no reimbursement if the participant chooses any other than the planned mode of transport. The full attendance fee must also be paid if the participant does not go on the excursion or sightseeing programme tour. The return times given may vary depending on the traffic situation. The organiser reserves the right to make changes to the programme.
 


Hotel reservations
Reservations for hotel accommodation in Berlin can only be made using the official registration form or at www.uia-berlin2002.com . Telephone reservations cannot be handled.
Hotel reservations will only be made if a deposit of EURO 250 per room is paid at the time the registration is made. If the total amount for hotel accommodation is less than EURO 250, the deposit will be reduced accordingly.

If all the rooms allocated in the respective hotel have already been booked DER-CONGRESS reserves the right to confirm reservations for a different hotel. The rooms that have been reserved will be kept back until 18.00 h on the day of arrival. We would ask for any later arrivals (after 18.00 h) to be indicated on the registration form. In the event of a hotel room reservation being cancelled DER-CONGRESS will levy a charge of EURO 26 per person. After 1 May 2002 a vacant bed charge can also be imposed if the hotel insists. The participants will receive a hotel voucher together with the congress documents at the registration counter in the ICC Berlin. An increase in the legally valid value-added tax may lead to higher prices for rooms. Group reservations will require separate contracts.

Liability

DER-CONGRESS, DERTOUR GmbH & Co. KG is acting solely in a mediatory capacity and will not be liable for any losses, accidents, injuries to persons or damage to property of whatever kind. This is without prejudice to the liability of the persons or companies charged with providing the relevant service. Any alterations or additions must be in writing and bear the signature of both parties to the contract. The place of jurisdiction for registered traders, for persons with no general place of jurisdiction within the country and for persons who have transferred their domicile abroad after the conclusion of the contract is Frankfurt am Main.

At the ICC Berlin participants will receive their name tags, congress documents and vouchers for their hotel reservation and all the other events confirmed by DER-CONGRESS. No documents will be sent out in advance of the congress. Participants who have not paid their fee will be asked to do so when registering at the ICC Berlin. Should transfer of the payment have been made too late and the relevant sum not have been credited to the DER-CONGRESS account, we would request a copy of the transfer slip to be presented. Only those participants who have paid all their fees will be granted admission to the congress. Visa, Diners Club, Eurocard and MasterCard are the only credit cards that will be accepted for registration on the spot.

Name tags
The participants are kindly requested to wear their name tags during all the congress and accompanying events. There will be no admission to the halls for anyone without a name tag. Accompanying persons will be given programme vouchers, which they must present on request. Lost name tags will be replaced at a charge of e 10 upon presentation of the confirmation of registration and an identity card.

Media check
The slide check facility at the ICC Berlin is at the end of the entrance hall (Blue Side). Slides should be handed in 90 minutes at the latest before the start of the presentation. They can be collected about one hour after the end of the presentation. All slides must measure 5 cm x 5 cm, have a plastic or metal frame or protected glass. Speakers planning to use a laptop for their presentation are kindly requested to contact the media check facility the day before their presentation.

Press centre
The press centre is in Rooms 41 and 42 on the 2nd floor of the ICC Berlin above the bridge.
The Business Contact Agency, Scantinental, is responsible for the press area.

Banks and automatic teller machines
There is a cash dispenser in the ICC Berlin. Other automatic tellers and banks are available in the immediate vicinity of the congress venue.

Restaurants/snack bars
A number of snack bars will be open during the congress in the ICC Berlin. The Pullman Restaurant serves excellent food. There are several restaurants near the congress centre.

Cloakrooms
A small charge is made for items of clothing and luggage deposited in the entrance hall of the ICC Berlin.

First aid
There is a first aid room in the ICC Berlin (Tel 30 38 58 30) on the Red Side next to the multi-storey car park.

There are several credit card telephones in the ICC Berlin.

Taxis
There is a taxi rank immediately beneath the ICC Berlin. Taxis can either be ordered at the ICC Berlin information desk in the entrance hall or called direct.

Parking
A day ticket in the multi-storey car park right next to the ICC Berlin costs EUR 7,50. The hourly rate is EUR 2,50.

Getting to Berlin and information for your stay

Arrival
The congress is being held in the Internationales Congress Centrum (ICC Berlin) on the edge of Berlin’s western city centre.
Berlin is easy to reach by all means of transport. If you are travelling by car you should take one of the urban motorways through the city leading to the ICC Berlin. If you are arriving from the north, take the A 100 and exit at Messedamm Nord. If you are coming from any other direction take the A 115 and exit at Messedamm Süd.
Parking spaces are available on Hammarskjöld Platz opposite the ICC Berlin or in the multi-storey car park adjacent to the ICC Berlin.
If you are arriving by train your terminus will be either Zoologischer Garten (western city centre) or Ostbahnhof (eastern city centre). Both stations are served by public transport, which will take you to the ICC Berlin.
Most airlines have direct flights to Berlin-Tegel Airport. Some also have flights to Berlin-Tempelhof or Berlin-Schönefeld. A taxi from Tegel Airport to the western city centre costs about EURO 15 and to the eastern city centre about EURO 18.

Official airline
Lufthansa –the national German airline – operates many routes between Berlin and cities throughout the world. Lufthansa is offering special rates to all congress participants. Anyone interested in flying Lufthansa to Berlin should contact the Lufthansa reservation desk or a travel agency.

Passport/visa
Participants from member states of the European Union need only produce their identity card for entry into Germany. Participants from other countries require a passport. Those needing a visa for entry into Germany should apply to the German Embassy or a German consulate in their country about three months before their departure.

Letters of invitation
Upon request, the Organising Committee will forward participants official letters of invitation to the XXI World Congress of Architecture Berlin 2002. These letters are intended to help the participants to raise travel funds or to obtain a visa. They do not constitute a commitment on the part of the organizers to provide any financial support for attendance at the Congress.

Insurance
Participants should take out their own travel insurance covering illness and all other risks. UIA Berlin 2002, the congress office and the Berlin Exhibition Centre will not be liable for any damage to or loss of personal items or luggage or any injuries, losses or damage incurred by the participants or any accompanying persons.

Local public transport
Reduced-price, 7-day tickets for the local public transport system will enable congress participants to travel on buses, the underground railway or the suburban railway within the AB fare zone. These tickets cost EURO 22 and can be purchased on the spot near the registration counter in the ICC Berlin. Buses, underground and suburban line trains all go to the ICC Berlin.

Currency
The Deutsche Mark (DM) will be converted to EURO on 1 January 2002. Exchange rate: 1 $US = approx. EURO 0.90

Opening times of shops
Most shops are open Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 18.30 hrs (and many until 20.00 h) and on Saturday from 09.00 to 16.00 h. Shops are closed on Sundays. Credit cards, such as American Express, Eurocard/ Mastercard, Visa and Diners are accepted in many shops and restaurants.

Value-added tax/turnover tax
In Germany, value-added tax is levied on goods and services. The current rate is 16% (7% on food). If goods purchased are being taken to countries outside the European Union this tax will be reimbursed at customs stations and at airports and stations upon presentation of invoices and customs documents.

Tips
Tips amounting to between 5 and 10% of the bill are customary in bars, restaurants, taxis, etc.

Climate
The congress will be held in midsummer. The average temperatures in July are between 19° and 23° Centigrade (72° Fahrenheit)
